Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Media ethics are integral to the practice of journalism, as they provide a framework for ensuring fairness, accuracy, accountability, and respect for human dignity in reporting. Journalistic credibility, which refers to the public’s trust in the media, is closely tied to adherence to ethical standards. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, the interplay between media ethics and journalistic credibility is particularly critical due to the community’s reliance on the media for information and societal development (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). Ethical lapses, such as sensationalism, misinformation, and conflicts of interest, can undermine public confidence in journalism (Oluwole, 2024). This study examines the impact of media ethics on journalistic credibility in Sokoto South, emphasizing the importance of ethical principles in fostering trust, accountability, and social responsibility in journalism.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of media ethics, journalists in Sokoto South face challenges in maintaining ethical standards. These include pressures from owners, advertisers, and political influences, which can lead to biased reporting and erode journalistic credibility (Mohammed & Abdullahi, 2024). As public trust in the media declines due to ethical breaches, there is an urgent need to explore how ethical practices affect journalistic credibility. This study investigates the relationship between media ethics and credibility in Sokoto South, addressing the gap in understanding how adherence to ethical principles can enhance public trust and the quality of journalism.
